Legislators, residents gather at Castaic church over landfill concerns

A handful of residents shared how a “dream home” in either Castaic or Val Verde had become a nightmare – thanks to the ongoing pollution problems at Chiquita Canyon Landfill – at a news conference Friday inside Castaic Community AME Church. 

As Castaic resident Darcy Stinson, a disabled veteran, talked about the “horror story” his neighborhood had become and described his battle with cancer, a 13-year-old boy who lives near the landfill started getting a nosebleed. 

Dr. Bains proposes the Stop Laying Off Firefighters Act

(Sacramento, CA) January 15, 2024 – Currently deployed to the LA fires as a Chief Medical Officer with the California Medical Assistance Team, Dr. Jasmeet Bains (D-Delano) today introduced the Stop Laying off Firefighters Act, which guarantees that CAL FIRE (California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection) will maintain full staffing levels throughout the year.

Pilot program to provide detox beds for Medi-Cal patients

Five detoxification beds are now available to Medi-Cal patients thanks to a pilot program between Kern County and Good Samaritan Hospital and funded by the state. 

The Kern County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday approved a $2 million pilot program for Good Samaritan to provide the detox beds for a year, expanding the range of treatment options available to low-income patients. 

Dr. Jasmeet Bains begins second term, vows continued advocacy for Kern County needs

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — Dr. Jasmeet Bains has been sworn in for her second term as the representative for California's 35th Assembly District, pledging to continue her advocacy for Kern County.

Bains was re-elected with more than 57% of the vote, a testament to her work in Sacramento and the ongoing needs of her constituents.
